Blog Reflection 7

Okay...

A lot has changed recently, my idea is going in a new direction; I'll explain why. So my initial idea was quite gritty, raw and fresh... It was simple but maintained a feel of British Social Realism, like a short film and a message about the youth of south England. Then it got diluted and watered down and ended up becoming what I'd see as a pop video and I couldn't produce that idea as I have no passion for it at all. I think it's best to nip it in the bud and change direction before I spend too long running towards a dead end!

SO!

Now my idea is about a young guy who spends a night alone in his room consuming a variety of vices; alcohol, cocaine and smoking, whilst watching films... Then when the sun rises he gets ready to go out as if he's just been pre drinking before a night out!

In the video above the main guy is drunk and quite an extrovert but everyone else reacts well to him as they're in the same state. My video will show my character drunk and misbehaving/causing trouble but the people around him will not react so well. So it's subverting the convention of the typical party video where everyones drunk and bouncing off each other.

The idea then is that at some point he's text someone and raised an alarm with them, then the last minute of the video is split screened with the receiver of the text looking around town for him and ends up finding him either on the edge of something or in some other life threatening situation. Sort of like the video below ---vvv---

Not the context of the video, but the feel that's created when he runs up the stairs to her and the resolve is quite nice.

I'm using my Nephew, Elliot (who's older than me) and his girlfriend, Lucy. They both now live in Bournemouth where my sister, Julie also lives so in the half term I'm getting the train booked to go down there and hopefully I'll be able to film everything I need!

Draft Magazine Advert- Holi

This is a quick run up of what my advert would look like but the picture in the back would be an original taken by me whereas the one used currently I took from the internet!

I went with a very minimalist design, in keeping with the genre of magazine this would be printed in... This is a picture featured on their website and in their magazine

Just the idea of text over a signature image, the simplicity of it.

Obviously I still have to add more info... Logos/websites etc but this is the basic feel of it right now!

Blog Reflection 6

Well looking in to Severalls, I've hit a bit of a brick wall or more a collection of high, sharp reinforced fences and a newly appointed security team. Also the new developments are well underway and I think a lot of it has been demolished. Also it's not strictly legal and not safe at all. The ceilings could collapse at any moment along with stair cases, chimneys etc. So! Another dead end.

I've thought about the first part of the video being a montage of shots at a stereotypical office, all cut to the beat with the members of the band performing mundane, repetitive jobs. Then at the end they would end up in a forest and the holi throwing would happen along with maybe flares and other colour aspects.

Possibly using old style keyboards like this-

and hanging them from trees, I think some nice shots could come of those being hit with the powder.

Blog reflection 5

This week I looked for other locations to throw my Holi and pretty much came back with nothing! It's understandle, councils don't want me throwing paint all over there high roads and thats fine. So then I looked at different places for example derelict buildings, such as swimming pools:

The thinking behind the derelict buildings was the image of colourful, vibrant powder being thrown over the washed out, old buildings. So I looked for derelict buildings within reasonable distance. Then from what seemed a divine power I found... "Severalls Asylum" in Colchester.

This place is beautifully eerie. The flaked murals painted on the long corridors give a sense of the rehabilitation that once was present. The idea of paradise or the lack of could be connoted through the beautiful colours covering the derelict, flaked walls and captured falling through the beams of natural light that pierces the dark haunting rooms. I need to do more research on the logistics of shooting here.

Blog Reflection 4

This week I did a lot of research into where exactly I could film as my new idea involves on throwing holi powder. This is basically powdered paint. Here are some examples of what this will look like:

This powder has a great effect on camera, it's real visual perfection. Also by using this in my video there is a lot of potential for my advert and digipak as this is a fantastic theme to carry on through all the products.

So far I've phoned around 8 councils in London to try and secure a legal place to throw the powder and I've got one place where I probably would be able to... However this is the private gardens of an art gallery and it's pretty much just a forest and I wanted a better location for my video!

I'll keep on looking for locations!
